“In October 2010, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, the world’s leading education company, contracted Connect Consulting to coordinate the development of its exhibition stand at the Frankfurt Book Fair – the world’s most prominent publishing trade show.

Connect’s responsibilities included creative concept development and project management of the booth-build (including construction, interior furnishing and transportation).  The booth concept centred around a complex audio/visual platform which was also coordinated by Connect with the assistance of a local supplier.  It also provided on-site project management service throughout the Fair, which proved invaluable in dealing with various last-minute requirements.

Connect worked within a tight budget to deliver a booth which was both high quality and cost-effective.  Throughout the development stage, Connect worked closely with several members of the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt team to ensure that various departmental requirements were met. The Connect team was at all times professional, collaborative, and showed a strong understanding of our company vision, helping us to translate that vision into an eye-catching and engaging booth.

HMH’s presence at Frankfurt Book Fair reflected our strength as a global brand and innovative company, and this was in no small part due to Connect’s creativity, expertise and commitment.”

In answer to this question, the range of average space per person in different offices is wide. This is true even with a particular type of organisation, such as investment banks or solicitors offices.

The lower end of the scale is represented by about 100ft² (9m²) lettable area per person (Example – Enterprise Ireland Fit Out, East Point. / Irish Times, Tara Street).  This would include modest working areas for each of the few senior people in the office, few amenities, and perhaps a degree of desk sharing.

At the high end is an average area of around 350ft² – 400ft²  (30m² – 35m²) per person, nearly four times as much, implying large amounts of space for each individual and lavish shared space and amenities. (Examples – Depfa Bank Ireland, / IFSC – MOPS, Solicitors, South Docks.)

In the case of call centres where desk space only requires a phone handset and PC you would be looking at 50ft² – 60 ft² (3.5m² – 4.5m²) per person. (Examples – Global Telesales, Lufthansa Ireland, East Point./ Start Mortgages, Clonskeagh).

The smaller allowance is not intrinsically better or worse, though it is by definition cheaper. It may or may not be appropriate for a specific organisation. In the US and Canada, a typical figure of 200 ft²  – 250ft² is lettable area per person for a medium sized organisation with differing levels of seniority of staff. In the UK and Ireland of 100 ft² – 150 ft² is fairly typical. In places like Scandinavia – 300 ft² + is not unusual.
